According to a report by the EU, Vasundhara was visiting an extra-neutral alcohol (ENA) plant in Uganda on October 1. During that time, several armed men claiming to be from law enforcement authorities took her into custody without any warrant. Aside from Vasundhara, the men also detained several of her colleagues as well, including the companyโs Ugandan lawyer, Rita Ngabire. Reports also state that Cherie Blair has been retained as international human rights counsel and given special instructions to secure the release of Vasundhara. Blair reportedly told the outlet:
Vasundhara is a vulnerable young woman, far from home, who is suffering an incredibly traumatic experience. Omnia Strategy has filed an urgent appeal to the UNโs Working Group on Arbitrary Detention to seek her urgent release and respect for due process and the rule of law.โ
According to the UN appeal, Vasundhara is also being denied access to vegetarian food ‘in line with her religion’. Moreover, the โauthoritiesโ moved her from prison-to-prison multiple times without prior notice.
Parents speak out
Following the incident, Vasundharaโs billionaire father wrote an open letter to Ugandan President, Yoweri Museveni, claiming that the 26-year-old is being denied basic rights as well as access to family or legal representation. Pankaj claimed that Vasundhara is curently being held under ‘false allegations’ made by their former employee. He also added that the โformer employeeโ stole valuables and took a $200,000 loan with the Oswal family as guarantors.
Moreover, Pankaj also filed an urgent appeal with the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, stating that his daughter Vasundhara was interrogated under degrading conditions. Vasundharaโs mother, Radhika Oswal, also spoke out with a heart-wrenching appeal to the Ugandan government. She pleaded:
This is every motherโs nightmare. My young daughter has been thrown into a foreign jail. She has been stripped of her basic human rights and her dignity. Vasundhara is an innocent bystander. All I want is her safety, and for her to be back in my arms.โ

Born in 1999, Vasundhara Oswal is an Indo-Swiss businessman and the daughter of billionaire Pankaj Oswal. She is notably renowned as one of Africaโs richest female entrepreneurs under the age of 30. Vasundhara is currently 25 years old and graduated with a Bachelorโs degree in Finance with Honours at the University of Switzerland. Pankaj and Radhika are her parents while she has a younger sister named Ridi as well.
Over the years, she has earned several impressive accolades ever since joining the business world. She is currently the Director General of Axis Minerals, a bauxite mining project located in Guinea. Following the incident, Vasundharaโs family took over her Instagram account and showed details of her current situation. The page explained how the 26-year-old was restricted from contacting her family and was forced to sit in a room full of shoes for over 90 hours. It also detailed how she was forced to use a toilet covered with blood and faeces on the floor.
