A political firestorm has erupted following the murder of NCP leader Baba Siddique in Mumbai. Pune man Shubham Lonkar who took the responsibility of the murder is missing after the murder.
Opposition parties, including the Congress, have said that law and order in Maharashtra, where assembly elections are due next month, has “completely collapsed.” The state’s ruling parties, the BJP and NCP, denounced the opposition for playing “petty politics” over the death of Siddique and promised that those involved would be held accountable.

The Mumbai police are looking into a social media post on Facebook by Shubham aka Shubuu Lonkar of Pune that purports to have been written by a Lawrence Bishnoi gang member and holds the perpetrator accountable for Siddique’s death. The 66-year-old minister’s murder is being looked into from a number of different perspectives by the police. Pune police began looking for Shubham Lonkar, who had gone missing from his Warje-Malwadi home, after Siddique was killed.

Investigations are underway over the confession posted by Pune-based Lawrence Bishnoi gang member Shubham Lonkar in murder of Baba Siddique, as well as the potential involvement of other suspects.
Police in Pune have confirmed that Shubham Lonkar, 25, and his brother Pravin age 28 operated a dairy business in Warje. The brothers moved from their hometown of Nevri Budruk in the Akot region of Akola district to Pune, where they opened a business.
Shubham doesnโt have a criminal record in Wajre but he was arrested by Akola police in a firearms case andleft Pune in June-July and has been out of contact since.
Shubham after finishing his 12th grade, had visited Rajasthan, where he allegedly became involved with the Bishnoi gang.
โShubuu aka Shubham Lonkar is absconding at the moment. Pravin Lonkar gave shelter to both the arrested accused in Pune,โ Mumbai police said.
Pravin and Shubham enlisted two shooters, UP resident Dharmaraj Rajesh Kashyap and Shivkumar Gautam and police have arrested Kashyap and another alleged shooter, identified as Gurmail Baljit Singh (23) of Haryana.

Shubham was taken into custody by Akola police in January 2024 on suspicion of supplying guns. The police in Akot retrieved nine rounds and two handguns from a well after receiving a tip. Following more inquiry, Praful Chavan, 25, and Ajay Dethe, 27, were taken into custody. On January 30, Shubham was found to be the mastermind and placed under arrest.
An Akola police officer said, โDuring the investigation of the January case under the Arms Act, it was discovered that Lonkar had made WhatsApp video calls with gangster Lawrence Bishnoi in 2022 and 2023 and had also received WhatsApp audio calls from three international numbers, including one from Bishnoiโs brother, Anmol.โ

Baba Siddique murder
The former minister from Maharashtra was shot twice in the chest outside his Nirmal Nagar office. Despite receiving medical care at Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai, he tragically passed away on Saturday night from his wounds.
Physician Jalil Parkar of Lilavati Hospital stated, “Baba Siddique was taken here at approximately 9:30 p.m. His blood pressure and pulse could not be recorded when he arrived at the emergency hospital, and the ECG displayed a flat line. He was moved to the ICU.”
