This is the most recent in a series of brutal attacks on politicians in the nation.
Just a few days after Francisco Tapia, the secretary of the city government, was shot and killed, 43 year old Alejandro Arcos, the newly elected mayor of Chilpancingo, was killed just six days after he took charge and was touring the town to visit the damage caused by Hurricane John. The body of Alejandro Arcos was discovered Sunday night inside his pickup truck, with his head resting on the roof.
This has raised questions about security in a nation that just saw its largest and bloodiest general election in history.

The murder of Arcos was deemed “unfortunate” by Mexico’s recently elected President Claudia Sheinbaum on Monday. She also said that her security cabinet will provide a “more detailed” explanation of the steps being taken to solve the country’s security issues on Tuesday.
The state governor Evelyn Salgado has condemned the killing and vowed to hold to account those responsible. He said, โHis loss is mourned by the entire Guerrero society and fills us with indignation.โ

Alejandro Arcos Catalan was a politician from Mexico who lived from 12 February 1981 to 6 October 2024. After winning the June 2024 election to become the municipal president of Chilpancingo de los Bravo, the state capital of Guerrero, he was slain six days into his term.
There is a recognized drug battle “between two drug gangs, the Ardillos and the Tlacos” in Chilpancingo. He assisted in delivering water and other supplies to villages hit by Hurricane John on the day of his murder.
Only a few days after President Claudia Sheinbaum’s inauguration, and in the midst of a rise in cartel violence in Culiacan, his assassination was notorious for its brutality. His severed head was left on the top of a truck, while his body remained inside the automobile.
Arcos graduated from Universidad Sentimientos de la Naciรณn with a Licentiate in political science and public administration. As a member of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), he served as the representative for the first district in the LX Legislature of the Congress of Guerrero. Arcos also made a failed bid in 2021 to be Chilpancingo de los Bravo’s municipal president.
Alejandro Arcos was declared the PRI-PAN-PRD coalition’s nominee for the Chilpancingo municipal presidency in March 2024.
