The Apex Body Coordinator, Jigmat Paljor, stated in a statement released on Wednesday morning that their detention which has lasted for more than 24 hours is unlawful.

“We, the ‘padyatris’, find ourselves in an alarming situation. We have been detained for over 24 hours. This detention is illegal, as the 24-hour period has elapsed, and we must be produced before a magistrate,” Mr Paljor said.

Sonam Wangchuk’s protest

Beginning on September 1st in Leh, the ‘padyatris’ marched nonstop, with the exception of when they entered Haryana, which was scheduled to hold elections, and boarded busses. They began an indefinite fast after being arrested on Monday night at the Singhu border in Delhi and brought to several police stations.


The Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) and the Leh Apex Body (LAB) organized the march. For the past four years, they have been leading an agitation to demand Ladakh’s inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and statehood.

Some people, including Mr. Sonam Wangchuk, were detained at the Bawana police station, while others were held at other police stations like Kanjhawala, Alipur, and Narela Industrial Area.

Sonam Wangchuk career and background

In the Ladakh area of Leh, Sonam Wangchuk who is a Buddhist by religion was born in 1966 near Alchi. Since there were none in his village, he was not enrolled in school until he was nine years old. Up until that point, his mother had taught him all the fundamentals in his own tongue.

Sonam Wangyal, his father, was a Congress politician stationed in Srinagar who went on to become a state government minister. He was brought to Srinagar at the age of nine and registered at a local school. Because he didn’t appear like the other kids, he would often be addressed in a language he didn’t understand, leading to people mistaking his lack of response for stupidity.

In 1987, Wangchuk completed his B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from National Institute of Technology Srinagar, which was formerly known as REC Srinagar. He had to pay for his own studies since he and his father didn’t agree for engineering. In 2011, he pursued two years of advanced study in Earthen Architecture at Grenoble, France’s Craterre School of Architecture.

Wangchuk gained notoriety in 2009 after Rajkumar Hirani’s film 3 Idiots, which starred Aamir Khan as Phunsukh Wangdu, was inspired by his experience. He is married to Gitanjali Jain Angom who is a Punjabi Jain. Sonam’s net worth is between $5-10 million.
