With a commanding 31-run victory over Sri Lanka in Sharjah, Fatima Sana demonstrated extraordinary maturity by leading from the front with both bat and ball. She became the youngest captain in Women’s World Cup history to guide her team to victory, surpassing only Meg Lanning of Australia.

Fatima was a No. 5 in most of the matches leading up to the tournament, so it seemed like a tactical error to drop her to No. 7 in the batting order. However, the right-hander more than made up for it with a brisk knock of 30 off 20 balls, which included three fours and a six.

After Fatima’s stroke helped Pakistan reach 116 when batting first, they exploited the circumstances to impede Sri Lanka’s pursuit. She also set the tone with the bowling, taking out Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Athapaththu (6) in the third over of the chase, which was a crucial wicket.

Fatima Sana career

Fatima Sana predominantly bowls for her country as a right-arm medium-fast bowler. She has represented Canterbury Magicians, Barbados Royals, Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited, and Karachi in domestic cricket.

She was included in Pakistan’s squad for their series against South Africa in April 2019. On May 6, 2019, she played her first Women’s One Day International (WODI) match for Pakistan against South Africa.

She made her Women’s Twenty20 International (WT20I) debut for Pakistan against South Africa on 15 May 2019. She was included in Pakistan’s squad for the Australia 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in January 2020.

Sana travelled with the Pakistani team to the West Indies in June 2021. Fatima Sana earned her first five-wicket haul in WODIs with 5/39 in the tour’s last game. Sana led the team in the second ODI against New Zealand on December 13, 2023, at Hagley Park in Christchurch, after Nida Dar was injured in the first ODI.

Sana was selected captain by the Pakistan Cricket Board in August 2024, the same month that the 15-member team for the 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup was revealed.

She made her T20I debut on 15 May 2019 against South Africa at Pretoria and she has got a chance to play only 43 T20 international matches so far in which she has taken 31 wickets with balls and also scored 316 runs with her bat.

After Nida Dar was injured in the first ODI against New Zealand, Sana captained the team for the first time in the second ODI at Hagley Park in Christchurch on 13 December 2023. And then in August 2024, the Pakistan Cricket Board appointed Sana as the captain while announcing the 15-member squad for the 2024 ICC Womenโ€™s T20 World Cup.
