In 1981, his father passed away. The funeral committee was chaired by his father’s friend, former prime minister Kakuei Tanaka. Tanaka urged Ishiba to pursue a career in politics in order to continue his father’s legacy. He is married to Yoshiko Ishiba.

Shigeru Ishiba career

Shigeru Ishiba has a strong interest in military affairs and is referred to as a “gunji otaku” (military geek). He is well-known for his extensive knowledge of defence-related law and weaponry, in addition to his love of creating and decorating model ships and airplanes.

The 67-year-old veteran politician Shigeru Ishiba will replace former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, whose announcement in August that he would not be seeking the party’s top job effectively ended his three-year mandate and caught the party off guard.

With the LDP holding a majority in both houses of the legislature, it is currently anticipated that Ishiba will be confirmed as prime minister in a vote by parliament on October 1. This practically guarantees that the party’s leader will take office as prime minister.

With Ishiba inheriting a party marred by a corruption scandal, an economy in a dangerous transition after years of stagnation, and growing security and diplomatic concerns on the international scene, the election result is expected to have significant ramifications for Japan.

Prior to the election, Ishiba set himself apart from his opponent Takaichi, who favoured ultra-low rates by endorsing the Bank of Japan’s policy of gradually rising interest rates and expressing concerns about the depreciation of the yen.

Ishiba’s triumph appears to have surprised a lot of people and breaks a string of four previous unsuccessful runs. According to a local media source on Tuesday, he was disliked by his peers because of some of his prior deeds and his outspoken personality.

Meanwhile, when Takaichi received the most votes in the first round, the hashtag “First woman prime minister” began to trend in Japanese on social networking site X.
