Why the Irani Cup 2024 Has Been Shifted to Lucknow?
The reason for this shift from Mumbai to Lucknow is due to concerns about the monsoon season. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to move the match from the historic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai to avoid any disruptions caused by weather conditions.
The Irani Cup traditionally features a showdown between the Ranji Trophy winners and a Rest of the team India. With Ajinkya Rahane-led Mumbai claiming the Ranji Trophy earlier in 2024, they are now prepared to dace the Rest of the Indian team in this year’s edition.
About Irani Cup
For the curious, the Irani Cup was first contested in 1960 between Bombay and the Rest of India team. To date, 59 Irani Cup matches have been played, with the Rest of India team winning 26 times, and the Ranji Trophy champions winning 25 times.
Meanwhile, the eight matches have ended without a result. With their 14 impressive wins in their total of 29 appearances, team Mumbai is the second-most successful team in the Irani Cup history.
Meanwhile, in another update, the Mumbai’s leading pacer Mohit Avasthi has been selected for the remaining matches of Duleep Trophy 2024. The cricketer will be seen representing the India ‘B,’ team in this tournament.
For the unfamiliar, the 31-year-old cricketer who made his debut on February 17, 2022 for 2021-2022 Ranji Trophy was instrumental while securing the Ranji title last season, with remarkable tally of 31 wickets from just 8 matches at an average of 15.74.
The Indian cricketer, whose full name is Mohit Anil Avasthi, is likely to take part in the Irani Cup field matches.
