Thulasimathi Murugesan is an Indian badminton paralympian whow as born on April 11, 2002, in Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu, India. She has represented India at the 2022 Asian Para Games and won three medals in various para badminton competitions, in the SL3-SU5 and SU5 classes. Thulasimathi recently made history after becoming the first Indian woman shuttler to win a Paralympic silver medal.
Thulasimathi, who has a sister named, Kiruttigha, had a deformity in her left hand by birth. The deformity caused her to suffer severe restrictions in her movements and flexion to under 30 percent. Murugesanโs father did not reveal about her condition to Thulasimathi, and instead made both his daughters play together early on.
She is fifthin the World Para-Badminton doubles rankings and second in the SU5 singles category and trains under coaches Gopichand and Irfan at Hyderabad.
Education
Thulasimathi Murugesan is a student of veterinary science at a college in Namakkal. The college is reportedly affiliated with the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Chennai.
Career
After starting out playing badminton at an early age, her current coach Irfan, eventually spotted Thulasimathi Murugesan and got her enrolled to the Gopichand Academy at Hyderabad. He did so with the support of Olympic Gold Quest, and set her on a path of glory.
During the 2022 4th Asian Para Games at Hangzhou, Thulasimathi won her first major medal wins after securing three medals in different events. She first won a bronze medal in the mixed doubles SL3-SU5 class alongside Nitesh Kumar. Following which, she won a silver alongside Manasi Joshi in the women’s doubles SL3-SU5 on 27 October. Thulasimathi Murugesan eventually concluded the event with a gold in the individual womenโs singles SU5 class.

In December of that same year, Thulasimathi managed to win the womenโs doubles alongside Manasi Joshi at the 5th Fazza Dubai Para Badminton International 2023. She also won a bronze in the mixed doubles SL3 and SU5, alongside Nitesh Kumar. Thulasimathi and Manasi currently rank second in the World Para-Badminton doubles rankings. She also won a silver at the 2024 Pattaya World Championships in the Women’s doubles.
Thulasimathi Murugesan currently trains under coaches Gopichand and Irfan at Hyderabad. Alongside her medal achievements, Thulasimathi also won the Sportstar Aces Awards 2024 Sportswoman of the Year award.
