Rakesh Kumar who holds the ranking of world number 1 is an Indian Paralympic archer. Kumar is currently competing in the Men’s Individual Compound Open, in Paris

Indian archer Rakesh Kumar made a stunning debut in the compound men’s category of the Paralympics, showcasing his accuracy and talent. Kumar qualified for the pre-quarterfinals by defeating Senegal’s Aliou Drame 136-131 in spite of difficult weather.

Rakesh Kumar, the silver medallist from the Asian Para Games, got his match underway with a flawless 10 in the opening end. Even though Drame won the second end by a single point, he was able to slightly close the margin, but Rakesh swiftly reaffirmed his superiority once more. In the third end, he increased his lead to five points and further cemented his dominance of the game with two perfect tens.

39-year-old Rakesh Kumar who is the number one ranked archer in the world currently was born on 13th January in 1985. He comes from the small town of Katra, in Jammu. Details about Kumar’s education and parents are not known.

Rakesh Kumar career

Rakesh Kumar represented India at Summer Paralympics held in 2020, in Tokyo, Japan. He achieved a gold medal in the men’s compound open section of the 7th Fazza Para Archery World Ranking Tournament, this tournament was held in Dubai on 26th February 2021. He is one of the highest-ranked compound archers from India, who holds 11th number in the world rankings.

Kumar was part of the team that received a gold medal in team competition at the European Circuit 2nd leg held in the year 2018 and won a bronze medal in the mixed team event at the 5th Fazza Para Archery World Ranking Tournament held in 2019.

Kumar trained himself at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board’s Sports Complex and he was coached by Kuldeep Vedwan. In September 2021, the Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha applauded and congratulated Rakesh for his game he played in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.

Rakesh Kumar was the lone survivor of a road accident which took place in early 2009, which left him bound to a wheelchair due to the severe injuries he sustained.

Indian mixed compound archery team of Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar have set a new Paralympic world record, having a combined score of 1399.

Rakesh Kumar won a silver medal one more time at 2022 Hangzhou Men’s Team Compound.
