Mona Agarwal, born in 1987, hails from Sikar in Rajasthan and is a distinguished Indian para shooter specializing in the women’s 10m air rifle SH1 category. In March 2024, Mona earned her a spot to represent India at the 2024 Summer Paralympics in Paris by winning gold at the WSPS Para Shooting World Cup in New Delhi in March 2024. At the Paralympics, she further demonstrated her prowess by clinching a bronze medal.

On Friday, Indiaโ€™s Paralympic campaign at Paris 2024 commenced with remarkable successes from Avani Lekhara and newcomer Mona Agarwal. At just 22, Avani secured gold in the womenโ€™s 10m air rifle standing SH1 event with an outstanding score of 249.7, becoming the first Indian woman to win two gold medals at the Paralympic Games. Meanwhile, Mona, making her debut at the Paralympics, achieved a commendable bronze by scoring 228.7 points.

Who is Mona Agarwal?

Mona Agarwal’s journey into shooting began in December 2021, following her exploration of various other sports, including volleyball. Her personal life has been marked by challenges, as her husband, Ravindra Chaudhary, a former wheelchair basketball player, has been undergoing rehabilitation at home due to a brain injury sustained in an accident.

Mona herself was afflicted by polio when she was just nine months old. After her marriage, she relocated to Jaipur. Despite facing societal stigma and being unable to complete her schooling due to prevailing gender biases, she found support in her maternal grandmother, Geetha Devi, who stood by her when her parents, desiring a son after two elder daughters, viewed her birth with disappointment. Mona is now a mother to a son, Avik, and a daughter, Aarvi.

Mona made her international debut at the World Cup in Osijek, Croatia, in July 2023. Following her triumph in Delhi, she continued her winning streak by securing another gold medal at the Para World Cup in Changwon, Korea, in April 2024.
