Know if the 2024 Paris Paralympics offer a prize money

Considering their emphasis on gold at the Olympics and Paralympics, Team USA is providing financial support this year.

The 11-day competition began with an opening ceremony that was, as always, breathtaking, and promises to be another captivating event. The disparity in compensation that these athletes experience is a fascinating topic to discuss, especially considering how many athletes compete to represent their countries and disabilities. World Athletics pays significantly more than World Para Athletics in Paralympics.

For the first time, international federations gave medallists cash prizes at the Olympics this year.

Sadly, international sports federations do not provide cash prizes for Paralympic competitions.

Therefore, World Para Athletics wasn’t feeling as giving as World Athletics was when it came to paying Olympic medallists.

World Athletics distributed £1.9 million in total, however the World Para Athletics governing body does not have an equivalent pool. However, this does not imply that all athletes will fail to win anything.

A few national committees have confirmed that if their athletes place in the medal hunt, they will receive payment.

Which competitors could earn money in the Paralympics in 2024?

Team United States began providing equal prize money to Olympians and Paralympians for the first time in 2021.

$37,500 (£28,400) will be awarded by the national committee to the gold medallists, $22,500 (£17,045) to the silver, and $15,000 (£11,360) to the bronze.

A little portion of what the USA pays its athletes will be paid by Hong Kong. The Olympic gold medallists received 644,000 Hong Kong Dollars (HKD), or roughly £63,400. The winners of the silver medal took home 322,000 HKD (£31,700), while the bronze winners took home 161,000 HKD (£15,800). A sixth of this will go to their Paralympians.

Australia will award AU $20,000 (£10,300) to medal winners. Bronze will receive AU $10,000 (£5,100) and silver AU $15,700 (£7,700).

Team GB will not receive cash award in 2024. In Britain, however, things are done a little differently. Athletes receive yearly training grants in place of compensation, which they can use to support both their everyday needs and their athletic endeavours.

The UK government set earmarked £232 million for British athletes competing in the Olympics and Paralympic Games.

The topic of underpayment for Olympic and Paralympic athletes in general should also be discussed, as there is still a long way to go before paralympic athletes receive salaries on par with their non-para counterparts. The summer games, and inevitably the Para Games, will undoubtedly demonstrate this point through their high calibre and entertaining programme.
