Medina Eisa bio

Medina Eisa Kumanda is an Ethiopian long-distance runner who was born on January 3, 2005 in Debre Markos, Ethiopia and is a Muslim by religion. She recently won the gold medal in the women’s 5000 metres at 2024 World Under-20 Championships in Lima. She previously won a gold in the same event in 2022. Median has also won a silver in the junior women’s race at the 2023 World Cross Country Championships.

Median Eisa is currently just 19 years old and stands at a height of 1.62 m.

Career and achievements

Medina Eisa gained prominence after finishing at 10th in the 5000 metres race at the Ethiopian Olympic trials for the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics in 2021. She was just 16 years old back then, and by April 2022, she finished in fourth at the Ethiopian Athletics Championships. Medina then clinched her first major gold medal in the women’s 5000 m at the 2022 World Under-20 Championships.

Later that year in October, Eisa won the Northern Ireland International Cross Country 6 km race. The following year, in February Median won a silver in the junior women’s race at the World Cross Country Championships. In April, the now 18-year-old set a new world U20 best in the 5 kilometres road race event at the Adizero Road to Records event that took place in Herzogenaurach, Germany.

Later in July 2023, Eisa competed at the London Diamond League where she won the 5000m with a new world U20 record. In December 2023, Medina won another title in the 15 kilometres road race Montferland Run. Earlier this year, in February, Median competed at the 2024 New Balance Indoor Grand Prix and set a new 3000 metres personal best time. She also won the 2024 Millrose Games two miles, but later got disqualified for cutting inside her staggered lane.

In March of 2024, Median won a gold in the 5000 metres at the African Games and then finished third at the 2024 Doha Diamond League 5000 metres. She also won the 5000 metres event at the 2024 Meeting International Mohammed VI d’Athlétisme. More recently, she has just won the 5000m title at the 2024 World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima, Peru.
