Manchester City and Manchester United advanced to the 2024 FA Community Shield after winning the 2023–24 Premier League and FA Cup, respectively. This was the 194th Manchester derby and the third Community Shield match between the two teams. The game remained scoreless until the 82nd minute when Alejandro Garnacho scored for Manchester United. Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva equalized in the 89th minute, sending the match to a penalty shoot-out.

Although Manchester City missed their first penalty, and Jadon Sancho’s penalty was saved by City’s Ederson, City ultimately won the shoot-out 7–6 after Jonny Evans missed his penalty. Manuel Akanji’s successful penalty secured Manchester City’s first Shield since 2019 and prevented them from setting a joint-record of four Shield losses. This victory also marked Pep Guardiola’s third Shield win.

FA Community Shied: history, prize money pool, & winners list

The competition, originally founded in 1898 as ‘The Sheriff of London Charity Shield,’ featured top professional and amateur football teams. It was renamed the Football Association Charity Shield after a dispute between amateur clubs and the FA, a name it retained until 2002. Traditionally, the Shield matched the winners of the Football League First Division (later the Premier League) against the FA Cup winners.

The event aimed to raise funds for various charities, with proceeds distributed among the 124 FA Cup participating clubs to support charitable initiatives. In 2002, the FA renamed the competition the Community Shield to honor the 250,000 volunteers in English amateur football and to mark a new £30 million sponsorship deal with McDonald’s. However, the real reason for the name change was the FA’s failure to comply with UK charity law requirements regarding transparency.

Surprisingly, the FA Community Shield doesn’t offer any prize money to the winner as its a charity event.

The funds are raised mostly through ticket and match programme sales, as well as through sponsorship’s and TV deals and the money is then given to teams in the lower leagues of British football, as well as to various charities, with each team competing in the first round of the FA Cup receiving £5,000 to go towards projects in their communities.

The main prize on offer to teams competing in the traditional curtain raiser is the trophy itself, with the main financial focus on raising money for associated community projects and official figures for this year’s edition aren’t yet known, but funds for the fixture are mainly raised by ticket sales, food and drink vendors and other miscellaneous costs.

It was reported in 2019 that a pot of £1.25m was split between the two competing teams, the majority of which was funded by the sponsor, McDonalds.
