Yang’s victory in the rings event on Sunday, marks China’s first gymnastics gold medal at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.

Liu Yang bio and age

Liu Yang is a Chinese artistic gymnast who was born on September 10, 1994, in Liaoning, China. He is currently 29 years old and a two-time Olympic and two-time world champion on rings. Liu was also part of the Chinese team that won gold at the 2014 World Championships and silver at the 2023 World Championships. He has bene a part of the national team since 2013 to the present.

Liu Yang stands at a height of 1.62 m (5’4”), and roughly weighs around 61 kg (135 lbs).

Career

Liu Yang began his journey in gymnastics at the young age of five. He gained prominence after winning a silver on the rings at the 2013 Cottbus World Cup, his first major competition.  During the 2014 World Championships, Liu won the gold medal in the team event alongside Cheng Ran, Deng Shudi, Lin Chaopan, You Hao, and Zhang Chenglong. He also won the individual gold medal on rings.

The following year, he competed at the 2015 World Championships, where he won the bronze medal with the Chinese team. Liu also represented China at the 2016 Summer Olympics where he was a part of the team that won the bronze medal. The, at the 2017 World Championships, Liu won the individual bronze medal on rings.

Liu Yang eventually started aiming for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and made his way through the qualifications. In the process, he won the 2018 Cottbus World Cup on rings, as well as the 2019 Melbourne World Cup and the 2019 Cottbus World Cup. Despite ending with the maximum number of points throughout the World Cup series, he lost the tiebreaker to Eleftherios Petrounias.

As such, he initially lost out on the chance to represent China at the Olympics. However, things eventually turned out in his favour after China earned an additional quota for the 2020 Olympics following the cancelled All-Around World Cup series event. Liu did not disappoint at the 2020 Olympics, as he won the gold medal on the rings.

He also won a gold on rings and silver with the men’s team in the 2023 World Championships. Liu Yang recently won the gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics in the Men’s Rings Artistic gymnastics. He has also won a silver at the Men’s Artistic team all-around.
