Gautam Gambhir appoints Suryakumar Yadav as new T20 captain
India’s new head coach Gautam Gambhir has decided to replace Hardik Pandya with Suryakumar Yadav as captain for India’s T20 squad. Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya will serve as the vice-captain, meaning that the two have switched their roles. According to reports, the decision comes following Pandya’s recurring injury issues and workload management problems.

Hardik Pandya vs Suryakumar Yadav captaincy record
Suryakumar is widely regarded as one of the greatest T20 batsmen of all time and mainly plays as a right-handed middle-order batter. Based on the statistics, Suryakumar Yadav does have better stats with Team India. Up until now, Hardik Pandya has captained India across 16 T20 Internationals so far. Out of these 16 matches, he has won 10 and lost 5, while 1 match ended in a tie.
Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav has so far captained 7 T20 International matches, winning 5 and losing 2. Suryakumar clearly has better stats in terms of percentage. However, Pandya has more experience but has had issues with the role.
Suryakumar has led in 24 T20 games, winning 16 of them and this includes both domestic and international matches.
In first-class cricket, his team has won 2 out of 10 games under his leadership and in List A matches his teams have 8 wins out of 14 matches.
India tour of Sri Lanka tour dates and format
India will begin their tour of Sri Lanka from July 27, with the last match set for July 30. The two teams will face off in a 3-match T20 series in Sri Lanka.

Following the end of the T20 series, India will begin their ODI series from August 2. Notably, there is a same issue for the ODI team as well, just like the captaincy role tussle between Pandya and Yadav. So far, the top candidates to become the captain of the ODI team include KL Rahul and Shubman Gill.
Gambhir will reportedly announce the news only after the announcement of Team India squad for the Sri Lanka tour. According to reports, Hardik Pandya will reportedly miss the ODI series after reportedly informing the BCCI of the same. Pandya has reportedly cited personal reasons for missing out the ODIs.
