For the unfamiliar, the Martyr Captain Anshuman Singh, who died in a fire incident at Siachen in July last year, hailed from Uttar Pradeshโs Deoria district.
Singhโs parents came to limelight after they voiced their concerns towards the existing rules that prioritize the spouse over the parents after marriage.
Let us remind you, on July 5, Anshuman was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, Indiaโs second-highest peacetime gallantry honor. His mother, Manju, and wife, Smriti, received the award from President Droupadi Murmu.
Days after the ceremony, Anshumanโs parents expressed that financial assistance should be given not only to the martyrโs wife but also to his parents.
They even met with Raebareli MP Rahul Gandhi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, demanding a change in what they termed as โobsoleteโ rules.
What Did Captain Anshuman Singhโs Father Say?
Ravi Pratap Singh, Anshumanโs father, lamented, โApart from a garlanded photo of our beloved son Anshuman, we are left with nothing, not even his belongings or service-related papers. It feels as if we were nowhere in Anshumanโs life.โ
Furthermore, he accused Anshumanโs wife of abandoning them and changing Anshumanโs permanent address from Lucknow to Gurdaspur to ensure she received all correspondence.

Anshuman and Smriti got married in their Lucknow home, where the family had moved in 2022. As per the claims made by Ravi Pratap Singh, after the wedding, Smriti stayed in Noida with their daughter.
However, on July 19, 2023, following the news of Anshumanโs demise, Smriti along with Anshumanโs sister went to Lucknow. Ravi Pratap Singh alleged that after the tehravi rituals she โInsisted on going back to Gurdaspur.โ
He claims that their daughter-in-law went to Noida with her mother and took all Anshumanโs belongings with her and went to her parents home. He also alleged that she didnโt even give them enough time to see or touch the Kirti Chakra.
What Did Anshuman Singhโs Mother Say?
As a tribute to Anshuman, UP CM Yogi Adityanath announced financial assistance of Rs 50 lakh, a government job for a family member, and a road named after Anshuman in the district.
Manju Singh, Captain Anshuman Singh mother alleges that their โdaughter-in-law who no longer stays with us,โ received all the assistance amount and other facilities provided by the government as she emphasized that the rule should be โamended so that parents are entitled to them along with the wife of the martyr.โ
About Next of Kin Rule
The Next of Kin aka NOK rules designate a personโs closest relative or legal representative. In the Army, if something happens to a service member, the ex-gratia amount is given to the NOK.
When a cadet or officer joins the Army, their parents or guardians are recorded as the NOK. However, once married, the Army mandates the spouseโs name as the NOK, which means all benefits, financial assistance, and belongings are transferred to the spouse in the event of the service memberโs death.
About Captain Anshuman Singhโs Wife
Captain Anshumanโs wife, Smriti Singh of Gurdaspur, is an engineer by profession, and her parents are school principals. After training in the Agra Military Hospital, Anshuman was posted there and became the medical officer of a battalion posted in the Poonch sector of Kashmir.
While Smriti’s age isn’t known, Anusham died aged 23 in July, 2023. Smriti Singh is believed to be aged between 20-25 years.
In an earlier interview, Smriti recalled their love story, โWe met on the first day of college. It was love at first sight.โ

She told the media that the couple were in a โLong-distance relationship for eight years,โ before eventually marrying. However, within just two months of their marriage, Anshuman got posted to Siachen.
While addressing the media, Smiriti revealed that the couple had a long conversation hours before Anshumanโs death.
She told the reporters that, โOn July 18, we had a long conversation about how our life will be in the next 50 years, building a house, having kids.โ Moreover, she recalled the moment when she received the tragic call, โOn the 19th morning, I got a call that he is no more.โ

She mentioned how she couldnโt accept the news of his death and the trauma it brought to the family.
