BCCI appoints Gautam Gambhir as new head coach
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah made the announcement of Gambhir’s appointment on X, stating:
It is with immense pleasure that I welcome Mr @GautamGambhir as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Modern-day cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape up close.”
He further added:
Having endured the grind and excelled in various roles throughout his career, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to steer Indian Cricket forward. His clear vision for #TeamIndia, coupled with his vast experience, positions him perfectly to take on this exciting and most sought-after coaching role. Gautam Gambhir takes over as new team India head coach
Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir is all set to take over as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team. The 42-year-old has vast experience and a strategic insight, and will undoubtedly bring in a fresh approach to the team.
As the new head coach of the Indian cricket team, Gautam Gambhir will be responsible for developing and managing a “world-class” cricket team and look to achieve a sustained success across all formats of the game. He will have to lead a team of specialist coaches and support staff, and oversee their development. Gambhir will also be tasked with enforcing disciplinary codes within the team and ensuring the highest standards of professionalism and conduct.
Eligibility Criteria for the Head Coach of India
The BCCI has set several strict eligibility criteria for the head coach position. Candidates must have a minimum experience of 30 Test matches or 50 ODIs or coached a full-member Test-playing nation for a minimum of two years. Alternatively, a candidate must have three years of experience as a head coach for an Associate member, IPL team, or equivalent role. A candidate must also hold a BCCI Level 3 Certification or equivalent and be under 60 years.
Gautam Gambhir salary
According to reports, Gautam Gambhir will earn an annual salary in excess of Rs 12 crore in his new role as the head coach of the Indian cricket team. The BCCI previously mentioned that the salary is “negotiable and will be commensurate with experience.”
While his salary yet isn’t known, it will be more than the Rs.12 crore Rahul Dravid was paid annually. Gambhir will remain as the coach of the team till the 2027 ODI Cricket World Cup.

Aside from earning a sizeable salary, Gautam Gambhir will enjoy several perks as the new head coach. He will benefit from luxurious travel and accommodation like travelling in business class to various destinations and staying in some of the finest hotels around the world.
Daily allowance
Along with a salary and other perks, the BCCI also provides a generous daily allowance for the head coach during overseas tours. Back in 2019, the BCCI doubled this allowance to $250 (approximately Rs 20,814.18) per day. As such, Gautam Gambhir will have adequate finances to covers various expenses and focus entirely on the team’s performance.

Gautam Gambhir is an Indian former international cricketer who was born on October 14, 1981, in New Delhi. He is currently 42 years old and is also a former politician and a philanthropist. Throughout his career, Gambhir played for India across all formats of the game between 2003 and 2016. Gambhir was a member of the 17th Lok Sabha from the year 2019 to 2024.

Gautam Gambhir married his wife Natasha Jain in 2011, and the couple have two children, Aazeen Gambhir, and Anaiza Gambhir.

Gambhir made his ODI debut against Bangladesh in 2003 and made his Test debut the next year against Australia. He played very crucial roles during India’s two wins at the 2007 World Twenty20 and the 2011 Cricket World Cup. Altogether, he played a total of 58 Tests, 147 ODIs, and 37 T20Is. He maintained batting averages of 41.95, 36.98, and 27.41 throughout his career.
Political journey
Following his retirement, Gambhir entered politics in 2019 with the Bharatiya Janata Party, and won a Lok Sabha seat from East Delhi. During that time, he was earning an annual income of about Rs 12.40 crore, and was unsurprisingly the wealthiest candidate in Delhi’s Lok Sabha elections. However, Gambhir decided to step away from politics in March 2024 ahead of the start of the new IPL season.
