Lulu Sun is a New Zealand and Swiss professional tennis player who was born on April 14, 2001, in Te Anau, New Zealand. She has an older sister named Phenomena, who plays tennis for Switzerland.

Lulu Sun initially represented Switzerland as a junior and finished as a runner-up in the 2018 Australian Open Girls Doubles event. She then won her first big ITF title at the Saint-Gaudens Open, with doubles partner Fernanda Contreras in May, 2022. That same month, she made her WTA main draw debut at the Morocco Open through a wildcard.
Sun later made her Grand Slam debut against Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto at the 2024 Australian Open. Earlier this year in February, she also played at the Dubai Tennis Championships where she got eliminated in the second round by Jelena Ostapenko.
Lulu Sun started her 2024 Wimbledon campaign this year with a victory against a top 10 player after previously defeating Miriam Bianca Bulgaru, Gabriela Andrea Knutson and Alex Eala in the qualifiers. She defeated World No. 8 Qinwen Zheng in the first round of the 2024 Wimbledon. She later defeated Ukraine’s Yulia Starodubtsewa and China’s Zhu Lin in round 2 and 3 respectively.
However, her biggest win came after she beat home favourite Emma Raducanu in round 4, securing a quarter-finals berth. In doing so, she has become the second-lowest-ranked player (#123) after Serena Williams (#181) achieved the same in 2018. Sun made 50 winners, which is by far the highest in the women’s singles event at the 2024 Wimbledon. Lulu Sun will now face Donna Vekic in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon 2024 on Tuesday.
