The horse racing world has lost a longtime horse trainer. Toby Sheets was found dead in the Greek Islands at the age of 55, this week. 

The island Mathraki in Greece, which is close to Corfu, a more well-liked vacation destination, is merely 1.2 square miles, according to CBS.

Recently, a number of tourists have unexpectedly died on the Greek islands; at this time, it is unknown how Sheets passed away. 

His passing was confirmed by Toby’s cousin Greg. He said, as per Daily News:

As reported by the New York Times, Sheets was last seen on Tuesday and was found dead on the beach on Sunday and TDN acknowledged him to be Sheets.

Asmussen said, via Thoroughbred Daily News: 

Today was a part of our stable for many years, including our Belmont Stakes win with Creator, as well as his expert handling of Haynesfield among others.” 

According to Athens News Agency, Sheets came to Mathraki to spend some vacation time with a Greek American friend and his passing marked at least the third death of a tourist in recent days on Greece’s Islands. The others were Dr. Michael Mosley, a British TV anchor and author, and a 74-year-old Dutch tourist and two French women who went out for a walk Friday in the heat are also missing.

Who is Toby Sheets? 

Toby Sheets was a longtime horse trainer and was a 55-year-old Floral Park resident. He was a trainer for Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen’s assistant. No cause of death has been announced so far pending an autopsy. He was first reported missing last Thursday.

The assistant trainer had been reported missing since June 13 and had last been seen Tuesday, June 11, at a café with two female tourists who later left the island as another tourist discovered Sheets on a beach near Mathraki’s old port around 1:30 p.m. local time.

As per Mathraki Deputy Mayor Spyros Argyros to The New York Times, Sheets appeared to have been washed out of the water within the last day because he was discovered in the waves at a location on the beach. 

The death of Sheets comes after other mysterious deaths in the Greek Islands in the last several weeks. Seven tourists in all, the majority of them hikers, have been reported missing or discovered dead this month alone. 

According to CBS, Sheets and two other travellers were last seen alive on Tuesday at a café. On Thursday, Sheets’ was first reported to be missing. 

A heat wave could be to blame for some of the deaths since temperatures in certain parts of the country have reached as high as 100 degrees, a report in Fox Sports said.
