India’s Strawweight Puja Tomar, is in the headlines following she made an history after becoming the first Indian to win a bout at the Ultimate Fighting Championship aka UFC on Sunday, June 9, 2024.

Standing 1.63 m, the 30-year-old MMA fighter emerged victorious at the UFC Louisville 2024 by split decision. She defeated Rayanne Amanda dos Santos with scores of 30-27, 27-30, and 29-28 in Women Strawweight.

“This win is not just mine; it’s for all Indian fans and fighters,” Tomar said in a video. “People used to think Indian fighters didn’t stand a chance. I wanted to prove to the world that Indian fighters are not losers.”

Reflecting on her experience, Tomar added, “Walking out with our Indian song and flag gave me goosebumps and filled me with pride.” In another video, she is seen teary-eyed as she is announced the winner.

About Puja Tomar

Born in Budhana village in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar on June 12, 1993, Tomar became the first Indian woman to secure a UFC contract last year. A former national Wushu champion, she has competed in championships like Matrix Fight Night and One Championship. She is a Hindu Rajput. The 30 year old has a height of 5 feet 4 inches.

Tomar was born in a small town called Budhana in northern India and her parents were farmers.

After four consecutive losses, Tomar left One Championship and joined Matrix Fight Night in 2021. She won four bouts there, most recently defending her title against Russia’s Anastasia Feofanova in July.

Reports indicate that Tomar trains at the Soma Fight Club in Bali, Indonesia, where Anshul Jubli also trained for UFC fights. Fondly known as ‘Cyclone,’ Puja Tomar is regarded as one of the best female fighters in the Indian circuit.

As per her UFC profile, Tomar began her martial arts journey at the tender age of 12 after her father passed away. Earlier in a interview, Tomar revealed the reason behind choosing martial arts.

During the post game interview, Tomar expressed that she wanted to protect her family after her father’s demise. After learning kickboxing and karate, Puja Tomar decided to make her career in the martial arts.
