Manchester City lose out on maintaining treble hopes
Manchester City missed out on retaining their UEFA Champions League crown and maintaining last seasonโs historic treble after Pep Guardiolaโs side suffered a penalty shoot-out loss to Real Madrid at the Etihad Stadium. Despite starting off the second-leg in a dominant performance, the match ended at 4-4 on aggregate after extra-time.
Real Madrid took an early lead in the 12th minute through a Rodrygo goal, but Kevin De Bruyne equalised for the home side with a 76th minute close-range strike. As the match went into penalty shootout, Real Madrid emerged as the winners after beating Man City 3-4 on penalties.
Madrid goalkeepers Andriy Lunin saved both Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacicโs penalties, despite Ederson managing to save Luka Modricโs shot. Earlier in the match, Manchester City registered 33 attempts, compared to Real Madridโs eight. Notably, both Erling Haaland and De Bruyne were withdrawn during extra-time and did not feature in the dramatic shoot-out.
The Sky Blues have now lost all hopes of reaching the Champions League Final at Wembley on Saturday, June 1. Manchester City however, still have the chance of winning the Premier League and Emirates FA Cup this season. They are set to face Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-finals this Saturday, and are currently at the top of the Premier League table, two points clear of Arsenal and Liverpool, with six matches left in the campaign.

This is because statisticians did not classify the result from the recent penalty shoot-out as a defeat.
