An open letter has been written in support of Francesca Amewudah-Rivers who has been the focus of online racial abuse following the Romeo & Juliet play. The letter has been signed by hundreds of performers and the majority of these performers are either Black female or non-binary actors.
Actors Lolly Adefope, Wunmi Mosaku, Freema Agyeman, Tamara Lawrance, and Lashana Lynch were among the 883 signatories of the petition.
The letter reads, “Too many times, Black performers – particularly Black actresses – are left to face the storm of online abuse after committing the crime of getting a job on their own.”
Romeo & Juliet will be running at the Duke of York’s theatre starting from 11th May 2024 to 3 August 2024. This will be marking Rivers’ West End debut.
26-year-old Francesca Amewudah-Rivers was born in Brighton to a Nigerian mother and a Ghanaian father. She attended the Oxford University to study music and received training from the National Youth Theatre. The British actress has a family back in Ghana as well.
Francesca Amewudah-Rivers career
In two seasons of the BBC comedy series Bad Education, Francesca Amewudah-Rivers co-starred with Jack Whitehall as Blessing. In addition, she wrote the soundtracks for the short films Messenger, Minutes, and Medea. She won the Evening Standard Future Theatre Award for Audio Design in 2021. Rivers has worked as a music intern on the Royal National Theatre’s production of Three Sisters which was a play by Anton Chekhov.
Francesca Amewudah-Rivers has been a performer for MacBeth and Othello Shakespearean plays which were presented by the National Youth Theatre.
She is cast with Tom Holland in a 2024 West End production of Romeo and Juliet at the Duke of York’s Theatre. Rivers played the role of Juliet. More than eight hundred black actors, including Lashana Lynch, Susan Wokoma, Freema Agyeman, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste, signed a letter criticising the negative comments made about the casting online.
