Meanwhile, Gukesh Dommaraju, Ian Nepomniachtchi, and Fabiano Caruana, all grandmasters, maintained their shared lead by drawing their respective games. In the 2024 FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament, Vaishali showcased her attacking prowess by sacrificing three minor pieces in pursuit of IM Nurgyul Salimova’s king. Despite her bold strategy, GM Tan Zhongyi retained her lead by securing a draw with Black against GM Humpy Koneru.
The game between Nijat Abasov and Hikaru Nakamura witnessed a rapid exchange of pieces by move 20, leading to a gradual progression towards a peaceful ending in the Exchange Variation of the Slav Defense. In another encounter, Gukesh D chose a solid line against Ian Nepomniachtchi, providing opportunities to press without taking undue risks. However, Ian’s impeccable defense resulted in a draw, concluding the game without a clear victor.
