In the first round of the Yonex-Sunrise India Open Badminton 2022, which is part of the HSBC BWF World Tour 500 tournament series, at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall here on Tuesday, world champion Loh Kean Yew was stretched to three games, but home favourite Kidambi Srikanth won convincingly.
Loh beat Xiaodong Sheng of Canada 16-21, 21-4, 21-13 in the first round, while Srikanth beat former junior world No. 1 Siril Verma 21-17, 21-10 in the second round.
Following a poor start, Verma threatened to take the match to Srikanth by reducing the lead to 9-9. The result was a foregone conclusion after the world championships silver medalist stepped on the pedal and began dictating the rallies.
