Loena Hendrickx, a two-time world medallist from Belgium, stands on the verge of securing the most significant title of her career. In the women’s short program at the World Figure Skating Championships in Montreal on Wednesday night, the 24-year-old achieved a career-best score of 76.98. Meanwhile, her rival, Sakamoto Kaori, the two-time reigning world champion from Japan, fell to fourth place with a score of 73.29.
Isabeau Levito from the United States redeemed herself after a stumble at the US Championships in January, earning a score of 73.73 and securing second place. Lee Haein from the Republic of Korea, the 2023 world silver medallist, holds the third position with a score of 73.55. Sakamoto, along with You Young (67.37) from Korea, rounds out the top five.
Hendrickx received a standing ovation for her performance to the Deep House Mix medley. She fell to her knees upon finishing her routine, covering her face with her hands. Hendrickx, who won silver in 2022 and bronze in 2023, aims to become Belgium’s first singles world champion in figure skating since Micheline Lannoy and Pierre Baugniet claimed consecutive pairs titles in 1947-48.
