The Election Commission of India (ECI) made a quick judgment and appointed IPS officer Sanjay Mukherjee as the next Director-General of Police (DGP) for West Bengal. This appointment comes on the heels of the Commission’s transfer of the state’s incumbent DGP, Rajeev Kumar, just a day prior.
Who is IPS Sanjay Mukherjee new West Bengal DGP, biography, batch, cadre, career
ECI Secretary Rakesh Kumar informed the State Chief Secretary that the Commission has approved Mukherjee’s nomination for the distinguished post of DGP. The directive was clear: immediate compliance was mandated, with confirmation sought by 5 p.m.
A top official explained the reasoning for this choice, stating that Mukherjee’s selection was based on seniority. However, the poll panel decided it would be wise to reinstate Mukherjee as the new DGP because of his impending retirement, which is set for the last week of May, which also happens to be the end of the Lok Sabha elections.
Following the announcement of the general elections, there is a reorganization at the top of the state police hierarchy. With West Bengal’s 42 Lok Sabha seats set to go to polls across seven phases, the timing underscores the Commission’s commitment to upholding fairness and safeguarding the electoral process’s integrity.
