A look at Maxi Hughes’ career

On September 17, 2010, Hughes won his first-ever professional bout at the Doncaster Dome via four rounds of points decisions (PTS) over Johnny Greaves. He fought Scott Cardle on April 20, 2013, at Winter Gardens, Blackpool, for the vacant Central Area lightweight title after amassing an 8-0-1 record (0 KOs).

Hughes lost via PTS in his debut title match, marking his career’s first loss. Following four wins, Hughes was supposed to compete against Joseph Laryea on September 12, 2014, at iceSheffield for the vacant International Masters super-featherweight title.

On the appointed date, Laryea declined to fight, therefore Kakhaber Avetisiani took his place. Throughout ten rounds, Hughes triumphed and won his maiden title via PTS.

Hughes and Ward, the current British super-featherweight champion, squared up for a third time on March 25, 2017, at the Manchester Arena, following three wins in non-title bouts. With scorecards from the judges reading 118–111, 116–113, and 116–112, Hughes lost by twelve-round unanimous decision (UD), suffering his third career loss.

He then made his comeback against Ryan Moorhead in 2017 winning the Central Area super-featherweight title. In September, Hughes went up against Jovanni Straffon for the highly coveted IBO lightweight title at Leeds’ Headingley Rugby Stadium, his first global championship attempt after winning the British title.
