After a fiercely contested victory over Angola, Nigeria advanced to the AFCON semi-finals ahead of the Democratic Republic of Congo, who defeated Guinea 3-1 after rallying from behind. After an incredible comeback victory over Mali, Ivory Coast will join them.
With a convincing victory over favourites Morocco, South Africa advanced to the quarterfinals where they played Cape Verde. To go to the semi-finals, South Africa defeated Cape Verde 2-1 in a thrilling penalty shootout, with Ronwen Williams emerging as the victor.
In the 122nd minute, Oumar Diakite’s goal pushed the 10-man Elephants into the semi-finals, much to the dismay of Mali. The host side, Ivory Coast, pulled off another incredible Africa Cup of Nations escape act. DR Congo overcame a 1-0 deficit to defeat Guinea and secure a semi-final berth.
