Ganpat Gaikwad, representing the Kalyan East constituency in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly has a controversial political history. He first emerged victorious in 2009 and 2014 as an independent candidate before securing a BJP ticket in 2019. His political journey, however, has been marred by a significant number of pending criminal cases, as revealed in his 2019 assembly election affidavit.
Reports indicate that tensions between the Shinde faction and the BJP escalated in August, leading to an altercation between their supporters. Ganpat Gaikwad, at that time, issued a challenge for a duel with Mahesh Gaikwad, the Shiv Sena chief of Kalyan. The situation was diffused by police intervention by preventing potential violence. These events laid the groundwork for the tragic incident that unfolded later.
On the fateful night, Ganpat Gaikwad reportedly fired at Mahesh Gaikwad within the chamber of the senior inspector of Hill Line police station in Ulhasnagar. The immediate aftermath saw Mahesh undergoing surgery after being rushed to a local hospital and later shifted to a private medical facility in Thane. The severity of the injuries raises questions about the consequences of political rivalries turning violent.

Ganpat Gaikwad on shooting Mahesh Gaikwad
In a surprising turn of events, Ganpat Gaikwad openly admitted to the shooting incident and expressed no regrets. He claimed that the act was a response to the perceived threat to his son, alleging that if his son were being beaten in front of the police inside a police station, he had no choice but to take extreme measures.
Additionally, he accused Chief Minister Eknath Shinde of attempting to create a “kingdom of criminals” in Maharashtra.
The police swiftly responded to the incident, arresting Ganpat Gaikwad and two others. They face charges under Indian Penal Code sections, including 307 (attempt to murder) and 120B (criminal conspiracy). The legal proceedings that follow will determine the accountability and consequences for the accused.
