Jharkhand’s Congress unit chief, Rajesh Thakur, made the announcement about Champai’s ascension on Wednesday.
According to reports, the new development arose following speculation that the current chief minister of Jharkhand, Hemant Soren, could face an arrest by the ED. Hemant is currently linked to a money laundering case and an alleged land scam. The Enforcement Directorate questioned Soren earlier this year about a money laundering case at his official residence. The inquiry took over six hours during heavy security cover and hectic political activities.
Champai Soren bio
Champai Soren is a veteran Indian politician who was born on November 1, 1956. Soren was born into a family that was rooted in agricultural farming. His father, Simal Soren, practiced agriculture, and Champai received his early education at the government school, where he studied till his 10th grade. He was serving as the minister of transport prior to obtaining his new role as the CM of Jharkhand. He is a Hindu from the scheduled tribe.
Champai completed his matriculation From R K M High School in Jamshedpur in the year 1974 and his net assets as of 2019 are Rs 2,28,22,491. He has declared Rs.76,50,059 worth of liabilities.

Champai Soren political career
Champai Soren is the 7th chief minister of Jharkhand and a member of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. He currently represents Seraikella in Jharkhand and was serving as the minister of transport prior to his new role. Champai entered politics right around when the demands for a separate Jharkhand state were coming up.
The 67-year-old aligned himself with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and quickly ascended the hierarchy. During his short political career, he achieved notable milestones, including participating in the Jharkhand movement. From there, he earned the nickname ‘Jharkhand Tiger’ due to his fervent advocacy. Champai won his first candidacy as an independent candidate during a by-election in the Saraikela constituency.
Objection over Kalpana Soren’s name
Following all the political turmoil in Jharkhand, reports suggested that Hemant Soren’s wife, Kalpana, was also proposed as the next CM. However, Kalpana’s sister-in-law, Sita Soren, who is also a JMM MLA, rejected the proposal. Notably, Kalpana Soren was also present at the meeting of alliance legislators held at the CM’s residence on Tuesday. For those who do not know, Sita Soren is the widow of Durga, who is the elder son of former chief minister Shibu Soren.
