All teams participate in a group of four games, with winners and runner-ups from each group, together with the four teams in third place, moving on to the knockout stage since 2019. During the knockout phase, the sixteen teams participate in a single-elimination competition that commences with the round of 16 and concludes with the tournament final.

Second only to Copa América in age, it is the world’s oldest continental football championship. Iran (three times) and South Korea (twice) were among the first victorious teams.
