Distinguished cricket players who have made significant contributions to the game are often acknowledged and accorded significant respect by the nations in which they play. The retiring of jersey numbers is one such action that preserves the legends of great cricketers.
According to sources, the cricket board has told players; particularly rookies; that they are not permitted to choose jersey number seven because it is not on the list. In honour of the great player who once proudly wore the retired number during their career, this practice indicates that no other player from that nation will wear it.
Sachin Tendulkar, whose No. 10 shirt is similarly out of commission, is the only other cricket player to have received a comparable accolade. Three years ago, Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket.
In India, at least 60 numbers are assigned to regular Indian team players and those who are in contention, however, the ICC permits players to select any number between 1 and 100. The source claims that the number is not given away when a player misses up to a year.
Some other nations have followed suit, with Australia retiring Phillip Hughes’ jersey number and New Zealand paying tribute to Daniel Vettori and Brendon McCullum in a like way. In keeping with the global significance of this gesture in acknowledging and appreciating cricketing brilliance, former Nepal captain Paras Khadka also had his jersey number (77) retired.
