Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia is on the verge of securing a spot in the semi-finals at the 2023 BWF World Tour Finals in Hangzhou. He emerged victorious over the local favorite Shi Yuqi with a score-line of 11–21, 21–7, 21–17 on Thursday. His fate will be determined by a crucial match against Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen scheduled for Friday.

Axelsen, coming off a defeat to Shi on Wednesday, bounced back strongly, defeating Naraoka 21–17, 21–9. Axelsen and Shi currently each have one victory, while Ginting leads with two wins. The results of Friday’s matches will determine which of the three players secures a spot in the semi-finals from Group A. If Axelsen wins and Shi defeats Naraoka, it would result in a three-way tie for the two semi-final spots in the group.

On the other hand, in the women’s singles draw, An Se-young bounced back from an unexpected opening defeat to her compatriot Kim Ga-eun in Group A. She secured a victory against Indonesia’s Gregoria Mariska Tunjung with a score of 21–14, 21–16, keeping her hopes for a spot in the semi-finals alive. Facing a challenging match against Taiwan’s Tai Tzu-ying on Friday, the world number one knows that only a victory will sustain her chances of reaching the semi-finals.

In contrast, Group B has already been decided with one round remaining. Both Spain’s 2016 Olympic champion, Carolina Marín, and China’s Tokyo 2020 successor, Chen Yufei, have each won two matches. The outcome of their Friday showdown will determine the group’s winner and the runner-up. On Thursday, Chen secured a win against USA’s Beiwen Zhang with a score of 21–13, 21–15, while Marín defeated Han Yue with a score of 21–11, 21–12.
