According to reports, systematic lupus erythematosus (lupus) is one of the most common systematic autoimmune diseases that is widely prevalent in China. Currently, there are over one million active patients. The chronic disease affects various parts of the body, including the skin, joints, lungs, kidneys, blood cells, brain, and heart. The disease usually occurs when the immune system attacks its tissues by mistake, which results in inflammation or even permanent tissue damage in some cases.
Women are reportedly nine times more likely to be affected by lupus as compared to men. Moreover, the disease is more susceptible to some racial or ethnic groups, including Asians, American Indians, Hispanics, and African Americans.
