On Saturday, the Adelaide Strikers, the reigning champions, clinched a hard-fought win in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2023-24 final against Brisbane Heat, successfully defending their title at the Adelaide Oval.

Having chosen to bat first after winning the toss, Adelaide Strikers’ captain Tahlia McGrath (38) and South African batter Laura Wolvaardt (39) contributed to their team’s competitive total of 125/5 in 20 overs. During the chase, Strikers’ skipper McGrath dismissed Mignon du Preez and Laura Harris in consecutive deliveries, reducing Heat to four down for 62 in 12.4 overs and helping her team regain control.

In the 20th over of the match, leg-spinner Amanda-Jade Wellington secured two wickets while conceding only nine runs, leading her team to a thrilling three-run victory in the final. With this win, the Strikers become the fourth team to claim two WBBL titles and the third, following Brisbane and the Sydney Sixers, to successfully defend the championship.

Women’s Big Bash League 2023-24: list of awards & winners

Chamari Athapaththu of the Sydney Thunder received the “Player of the Tournament” award for her consistent performance throughout the 2023–24 Women’s Big Bash League. Amanda Jade Wellington, representing the Adelaide Strikers, clinched the title of “Player of the Final.” Beth Mooney, playing for the Perth Scorchers, secured the “BKT Golden Bat Award” by accumulating 697 runs during the tournament. On the other hand, Sophie Day from the Melbourne Stars received the “BKT Golden Arm Award” for her outstanding bowling skills, evidenced by taking twenty-seven wickets in the competition.

Currently, there is no official announcement about the prize money for this esteemed competition. Nevertheless, it has been observed that the average retainer for WBBL players has doubled to approximately $54,000, and the top earners in the league receive an annual income of $133,000. Domestic players who take part in both the WBBL and the 50-over WNCL competition would, on average, achieve an annual income of $151,019.
