Travis Head, who etched his name in World Cup history by scoring a century while chasing a total, found himself at the epicenter of the online onslaught. The Narendra Modi Stadium witnessed his stellar performance.

Similarly, Glenn Maxwell’s wife, Vini Raman, faced the ire of Indian fans on social media. Born to Indian-Tamil parents, Raman defended her right to support her husband’s team, urging fans to focus on more significant issues.

The abusive comments and direct messages she received highlighted the toxicity that had crept into the online space post the World Cup final.

The situation escalated to the point where several Australian cricketers felt compelled to report the threats to Cricket Australia. The board confirmed the receipt of multiple complaints, exposing the ugly underbelly of fandom turned toxic.

The threats extended beyond online harassment, with death threats and rape threats directed not only at the players but also at their families.

Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh took to social media to condemn the trolling of Australian players and their families. He emphasized the unsportsmanlike conduct and urged fans to channel their passion for the sport in a more positive and respectful manner.

Cricket, often regarded as a religion in India, is now marred by elements that go beyond the boundaries of sportsmanship. The infusion of politics and religion into the game, as witnessed during the World Cup, raises concerns about the future of cricket’s image on the international stage.
