The Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School superintendent, Bill Runey, stated in a statement received by The Sun Chronicle on Friday that the player, “sustained significant facial and dental injuries.” The identity of the player who was injured during the state tournament has not been disclosed as of now. She was a player in high school field hockey.

Viewers can see the male player (No. 2) hitting the ball in the social media footage, which soars up and smacks his opponent, a female player in the mouth. Following the occurrence, the girl can be heard sobbing, while her pals can be heard staring in shock and covering their mouths.

According to footage of the event, the female player could be heard screaming in pain as trainers raced to the scene following the hit. The girl then needed a medical emergency. In a statement to the outlet, The Sun Chronicle, one coach called the exchange “traumatic.”

According to the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association’s regulations, men are permitted to play on female teams. However, the team captain, Kelsey Bain is asking for action against the male player, following the incident.

Sawyer Groothuis is a player for Swampscott and a women’s league “Northeastern Conference All-Star.” Not much is known about the player as he comes under the limelight following the unfortunate incident.

Earlier, last week, the No. 12 Swampscott field hockey team defeated No. 21 Dighton-Rehoboth 2-0 to protect home field and move on to the next round of the state competition. Northeastern Conference All-Star Groothuis’ goal gave Swampscott the lead at the half. Groothuis sealed the victory in the second half by striking the back of the net once more.
