In addition to a testimonial luncheon at the MCG last week that was attended by legendary cricketers Ian and Trevor, a GoFundMe page has been established for Chappell.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, it raised nearly AUD 95,000 of the $250,000 target and you can donate for it here. Donations from individuals including former Victoria captain Simon O’Donnell, head of ACT Cricket Greg Boorer, and Mike Baird, chair of Cricket Australia, have given an additional $72,350 to the GoFundMe page.

Chappell was part of a legendary trio that defected to Kerry Packer’s World Series Cricket in the late 1970s, along with fast bowler Dennis Lillee and wicketkeeper Rod Marsh. However, unlike Lillee and Marsh, Chappell did not receive a fundraising testimonial at the end of his cricket career to help set him up after quitting.

What circumstances made him lead an ordinary life?

Chappell, an Adelaide renter, claimed that although his cricket career has brought him success, he is by no means living a life of luxury. Regretfully, Chappell had a setback in business a few years ago. Although he did not elaborate, the opportunity cost of the years spent organizing his funds meant that not only did he have nothing coming in, but there was also nothing left over to invest.

The public aspect of it definitely doesn’t appeal to him. Even though he was handling it, he didn’t want to draw attention to it. Greg claims that there are many cricket players in his acquaintance—at least ten to fifteen guys—who are having difficulties.

Chappell was persuaded to attend a benefit lunch at the MCG last Monday by his friends, Canberra businessman Peter Maloney and former Essendon president David Evans.

Role of the Australian Cricketers’ Association

The CEO of the Australian Cricketers’ Association, Todd Greenberg, stated that current players are aware of the plight of their former teammates. Cricket Australia athletes are cognizant of the individuals who dug the well to enable them to profit in the ways that they do now, especially those from Greg’s generation. Not only conscious but immensely appreciative, according to a statement from Greenberg.

Current players presently support our prior players through health and well-being grants, medical support, emergency aid, and programs that help keep our members engaged with the game through their share of earnings. However, accounts such as Greg’s serve as a useful reminder that the demands of the players who paved the way for professionalism are increasing. Thanks to the ACA, we are now in a position where we can launch an effort soon that will greatly increase the amount of help that we can offer.
