The court cited insufficient evidence as justification for its choice and expressed worry about what it called a “botched” CBI inquiry.
On death row, Surendra Koli, 55, and Moninder Singh Pandher, 70, were both detained in December 2006 and January 2007, respectively. Following the horrifying finding of bones, skulls, and body parts in a sewer outside Pandher’s Noida home in the Nithari neighborhood, their arrests were made.
After serving more than 16 years in prison, Pandher and Koli had to go through a judicial journey; the former was cleared in the two instances that remained out of the six in which he had first been found guilty and given a death sentence by CBI courts. A session court and the high court had already acquitted him in four other cases.
Families of the victims, who were mainly poor, working-class people from Nithari, voiced their disappointment with the court’s ruling. As their dissatisfaction reached a boiling point, they stoned Moninder Singh Pandher’s vacant house in an act of rage. The government’s reaction to these acquittals is still pending, so it’s unclear how this legal journey will end.
Since then, Pandher has become a trending topic of discussion, with many people trying to find out more about him. So, here’s what we know about him:
