Every tournament starts with a round-robin preliminary stage in which the top two teams advance to the semi-finals to face off for the medals. The third and fourth positions will face off for the fifth through eighth spots.
The following countries competed in the women’s draw: Brazil (8th in the FIBA ranking), Puerto Rico (12th), Colombia (30th), Argentina (31st), Cuba (40th), Venezuela (42nd), Mexico (43), and Chile (78th).
Meanwhile, men’s participants in the draw included Argentina (7th), Brazil (12th), Puerto Rico (16th), Dominican Republic (18th), Venezuela (22nd), Mexico (25th), Panama (55th), and Chile (62nd).
