The pair has guaranteed India its first-ever medal in women’s doubles at an international table tennis competition with this victory. Who is Sutirtha Mukherjee?

Table tennis player Sutirtha Mukherjee was born on October 10, 1995 in Naihati, West Bengal. She is from the same city as her table tennis partner Ayhika is from. The two are great good friends playing the sport since two decades but are not sisters as per rumors.

A look at Sutirtha Mukherjee’s career so far

Sutirtha Mukherjee has won the national table tennis title and competed for India’s women’s team at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, where they took home the gold medal. Mukherjee attended the 2020 Summer Olympics on behalf of India.

She made her international debut in 2013 at the Junior ITTF Open in Slovakia, where she took home three titles in the girls’ singles, doubles, and team competitions. Following that, she competed in the Asian Table Tennis Championships, Australian Open, Korean Open, and World Junior Table Tennis Championships.

Sutirtha and partner Harmeet Desai won two gold medals in the 2019 South Asian Games in the singles and mixed doubles divisions. In February 2020, she won her second national championship. She won the 2016 Senior National Table Tennis Championships’ National Championship title.

Amid all the success, she rose from 502 to 95 in a year’s time on the international table tennis rankings chart and is currently ranked 147th in the world.

Sutirtha Mukherjee’s mother helped her choose table tennis

She was introduced to table tennis by her mother Nita Mukherjee when she joined Sutirth in a neighbourhood table tennis club in Naihati. She began her training with coach Mihir Ghosh. Later, she changed locations and began training with Soumyadeep Roy in Jadavpur.

Her father’s name is Avijith Mukherjee.
