After their recent 3-0 defeat by Peterborough, Cheltenham have matched the EFL record of eight games without a single goals previously set by Halifax in 1990-91.
Wade Elliot resigns as Cheltenham manager
Wade Elliot has decided to resign as Cheltenham boss following a disappointing run of games in the new season. Under Wade’s leadership, Cheltenham has lost seven of their eight games in the season so far. Moreover, they have failed to score any goals this season. Wade left the club despite giving a strong statement after the game against Peterborough.
Following the game against Peterborough, Wade Elliott shared how he makes the decisions that he thinks best and that he remains unaffected by criticism. He shared about how he loves his job but that the club would keep going through tough periods whether or not people want to hear about it. He stated his genuine believe that he is the best person to help continue building the club long term. Wade acknowledged that he will continue to face criticism from some fans about his statements, but concluded that this is how he genuinely feels. While he assured that he loves the club and will continue pushing and progressing, he added that fans can’t expect a quick transformation.
Wade Elliot career with Cheltenham
Interestingly, Wade Elliott initially arrived as a head coach replacement for Michael Duff in June 2022. He was first linked with Cheltenham coaching staff back in 2020 and served as the first-team coach before taking up the head coach role. Wade guided the side to League One safety and a 16th place last season, but this season has been nothing short of disappointing so far. Cheltenham are on a poor run of form, having failed to score or even register a single win so far.
Following the decision to leave, the official Cheltenham statement on their website read:
Cheltenham Town have today parted company with first team manager Wade Elliott by mutual consent.”
“The Directors would like to place on record their appreciation for Wade’s contribution since joining the club as a coach in September 2020, playing a significant role in the League Two title win and then the Club’s highest finish alongside Michael Duff. He was named head coach last summer and went on to achieve the Club’s second highest finish in his own right.
The statement further stated that the club have appointed assistant manager Kevin Russell as the interim in charge. He will lead the team against Stevenage on Saturday at The Completely-Suzuki Stadium.
