Lyon vs Marseille was suspended after Dimitri Payet was hit in the face by a water bottle thrown at him by a Lyon fan as shown in video footage of the incident
For some reason, football fans in France just don’t like the look of Marseille captain Dimitri Payet.
After being pelted with water bottles by Nice fans in August when he had resorted to throwing the bottles back at the fans, Payet was once again subjected to the same vile act. The Marseille man had a Lyon fan throw a bottle at his face as he went to take a corner during his side’s match, an act which eventually lead to the contest being suspended.

Video footage which has emerged of the incident showed Payet being struck in the back of the head in only the fourth minute of the clash. The ultra who had decided to swing the water bottle at Payet was subsequently captured being slapped in the face by the head of the Lyon fan group in the stands.

This is the fourth clash in Ligue 2021-22 involving Marseille which has been suspended this season. While fans were initially informed that the clash would resume, things failed to get underway after more than two hours with officials eventually deciding it was prudent to bring an end to proceedings.
Marseille President Pablo Longoria said: “It is a clear question, it was the position of the club that the referee had to make a decision. Above all there was a question we were asking, owing to the psychological state of the players. Dimitri is affected psychologically, this is not normal.”
