Pedri, 20, will be absent from Barça’s upcoming two matches, which are away at Villarreal and Osasuna, as well as the September international break for Spain.
It is unclear if Pedri will be able to participate in those matches or if he would have to wait until the following matches against Mallorca and Sevilla. Barca then hosts Real Betis on September 17 and Celta Vigo on September 24. FC Barcelona announced in a statement:
Pedri has a right quadriceps injury.”
The club further stated:
He is unavailable for selection and his recovery will determine his return.”
The Barcelona team will be praying that Pedri does not sustain the same injury that cost him two months of the current campaign.
It is the most recent of several problems Pedri has had since playing 52 games in his first season with Barça in 2020–21, in addition to the European Championship and Olympic Games with Spain.
The former Las Palmas midfielder missed 41 international and club games in 2021–2022, mostly due to a hamstring injury that kept him out for several months. He also missed 15 games in the second part of the previous season as a result of a second hamstring injury he suffered against Manchester United in the Europa League.
Pedri started both of Barca’s matches so far this season; a scoreless draw with Getafe and a 2-0 triumph over Cadiz on Sunday; and he also netted the game’s opening goal in the latter.
With defender Ronald Arajo out with a hamstring injury until after the September international break, it is the second injury setback for Barca in the past week.
On Sunday, Barça will play in LaLiga when they visit Villarreal. Ilkay Gundogan and Oriol Romeu were acquired this summer to bolster the team, so Xavi does have plenty of midfield backup.
