Chandrayaan-3 vs Luna-25 moon mission budget difference in Indian rupees

On Wednesday, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) made history by landing on the lunar south pole region, know the budget of Chandrayaan 3 and Luna 25 in Indian rupees

Launched on July 14, the Chandrayaan-3 missionโ€™s budget was one of the most cost-effective, compared to Russiaโ€™s failed Luna-25 mission and the Hollywood sci-fi movie Interstellar.ย

Chandrayaan-3 vs Russia Luna-25 moon mission budget difference in Indian rupees

Russia’s Luna 25, which crashed trying to soft-land on Moon’s south pole, cost Rs 1,600 crore. China’s shot to the Moon was even costlier and the first Chang’e probe to the Moon cost Rs 1,752 crore (1.4 billion yuan or $219 million).

On Wednesday, August 23, 2023, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) created history as it became the first space agency to successfully land a lunar probe on the Moonโ€™s South Pole. With this, India joined the United States, Russia (the former USSR), and China as the fourth countries to successfully land a spacecraft on the moon.

The most recent accomplishment by ISRO demonstrated the space agency’s technological prowess as well as its capacity to set new records without breaking the bank.ย

Budget of the Successful Chandrayaan-3 Mission

As per the former chairman of ISRO, K Sivan, the Chandrayaan-3 was made with a budget of Rs 615 crore (nearly $75 million).ย

According to Union Minister Jitendra Singh, the launch vehicle was not included in the approved cost of Rs. 250 crore for Chandrayaan-3. As a result, the LMV3 payload carrier, which ISRO used to launch Chandrayaan-3, is believed to have cost roughly Rs. 365 crore.

The lunar exploration mission’s overall budget is far lower than that of its predecessor, Chandrayaan-2, which may not have been able to successfully establish India’s presence on the moon. According to data released by the centre, the mission, the second in India’s series of lunar probes, cost a total of Rs. 970 crore (about USD 117 million). According to the government, the mission succeeded in achieving the majority of its goals.

Last week, the mission was called off when its lander module crashed into the area of the moon’s south pole, where ISRO’s “Vikram” managed a soft touchdown on Wednesday.

The third mission in ISRO’s Chandrayaan series will demonstrate a soft and safe landing on the moon’s surface, as well as how to manoeuvre the Pragyan rover there. It will also carry out in-situ scientific experiments.
