A virtuoso of the Indian music industry, Shankar Mahadevan has now achieved a new height by being part of the new panel of key members. He will be among a panel of 19 members who will be responsible for developing and revising the NCERT book for classes 3 to 12.

Who Is Shankar Mahadevan?

Shankar Mahadevan has performed more than 7,000 songs throughout his music career. He primarily works in the Indian film business as a composer and singer. Shankar is a superb Indian musician who shot to prominence with his excellent song “Breathless.”

Shankar Mahadevan’s Early Life

Shankar Mahadevan was born into a Tamil family on March 3, 1967, in Chembur, Mumbai. His family speaks Tamil and is originally from Palakkad in Kerala. He began learning music at an early age and took courses in both Hindustani classical music and Carnatic music.

He had started learning the Veena before he was five, with the assistance of Shri Lalitha Venkataraman. Pandit Shrinivas Khale and T.R. Balamani were two of the music masters that Shankar Mahadevan studied.

Shankar Mahadevan’s Education

Shankar Mahadevan attended Chembur’s Lady of Perpetual Succour High School for his secondary education. He earned his degree in computer science and software engineering in 1988 from Mumbai’s Ramrao Adik Institute of Technology.

Mahadevan’s career as a composer began in 1999 with the release of Rockford and Bhopal Express. Since then, he has composed the score for close to fifty films. He worked on many films; some of the hits are:

As a judge, Shankar Mahadevan has participated in a number of talent competition programmes, such as

  • Rising Star
  • Super Singer seasons 6 and 7 

In the Tamil version of Super Singer 8, he also served as a judge and performer. Along with others, he appeared on stage alongside Hariharan, Sid Sriram, Unni Krishnan, and Anuradha Sri Ram.

  • In 2000, for “Yenna Solla Pogirai” (Kandukondain Kandukondain), he won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer. 
  • In 2007, he received the Swaralaya-Kairali-Yesudas Award for his exceptional contribution to Indian film music. 
  • Later in 2007, he was honoured with a second National Film Award for “Maa” from Taare Zameen Par. 
  • He won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for the song “Kalyana Kacheri.”
  • In 2009, he received the Asianet Film Award for Best Male Playback for the song “Pichavecha Naal.” 
  • In the same year, 2009, he also won the Best Male Singer award at the Annual Malayalam Movie Awards (Dubai) for the same song.
  • Later in 2011, he received recognition from the Andhra Pradesh government after winning the Lata Mangeshkar Award. 
  • Additionally, he won the Kerala Film Critics Award and the MAA Music Award for Best Male Playback Singer.
  • In 2012, he received his third National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer. 
  • In 2019, one of the greatest civilian honours bestowed upon him was the Padma Shree Award, which was given to him by President Shri Ram Nath Kovind in recognition of his services to the arts category of the film and music industries.
