Minister Saji Cheriyan announced the start of the 69th season of the Nehru Trophy Boat race when Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s chopper was unable to land in Punnamada due to inclement weather.
The event’s opening remarks were delivered by the minister, who highlighted that the state’s numerous other boat races were inspired by the event’s admirable act of unity. Following the inauguration, an energetic group drill with all snake boats was held.
Among those present at the event were district collector Haritha B Kumar IAS, ministers P Prasad, K Rajan, and V Abdurahiman, and speaker M B Rajesh.
The small boat race in Alappuzha’s Punnamada Lake got underway at 11 a.m. today. The veppu boat, Iruttu Kuthi A, and B Grade competitions have concluded, so far. The snake boat race is set to begin at three o’clock pm.
Rain cannot dampen the competitive spirit
Although there is some rain at the competition site, neither the competitors’ nor the spectators’ spirits have been affected.
72 boats, including 19 snake boats (chundan vallams), are competing in nine divisions this year. The boat types include Iruttukuthi B Grade, Iruttu Kuthi A Grade, Veppu A and B grade, Churulan, Thekkanodi Thara and Thekkanodi Kettu boats. This year, the competition combines modern beginning and photofinishing technology to select winners.
