During school functions, Shamseer promoted scientific knowledge above mythologies, which sparked arguments between sides. He contrasted the Wright Brothers with the mythological Pushpak Vimana as aviation’s founders and cast doubt on myths like Ganesha’s cosmetic surgery.
Once AN Shamseer made remarks about Lord Ganesha and Pushpaka Vimana, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and organizations like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) promptly started a campaign against him. Nonetheless, AN Shamseer, in an attempt to address the ongoing controversy, emphasized his respect for all religions.
He cited Article 51 of the Constitution while addressing the media at the Legislative Assembly building, emphasizing the necessity of advancing scientific temper. Shamseer made it clear that he didn’t want to spread baseless notions; rather, he wanted to promote science.
AN Shamseer responded to the BJP’s attack by insisting that his credentials as a secularist were unquestionable. He reaffirmed his dedication to maintaining Kerala’s delicate balance of inter-communal peace and denounced any efforts to upset it.

Who is AN Shamseer?
AN Shamseer is an Indian politician associated with communist politics. He has been in the news because he stirred controversy by making alleged derogatory comments against Lord Ganesha and Pushpaka Vimana.
He was born on 24 May 1977 in Thalassery, Kannur, Kerala. His father’s name is Usman Komath, and his mother’s name is A. N. Sareena. He is a Muslim by religion.
AN Shamseer completed his elementary education at BEMP High School. He then continued on to Government Brennen College in Thalassery. Subsequently, he received a BA.L.L.B. degree from Kannur University’s Faculty of Legal Studies, Department of Laws. He also has master’s degrees in both anthropology and law (LL.M.) from Kannur University Campus.
He is married, and his wife’s name is Dr. P. M. Sahala. The couple also has one child named Izaan Shamseer.
He is currently 46 years old.
His career
During his college years, AN Shamseer began his political activism with the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), moving up the organization’s ranks from the local to the national leadership. He was appointed College Union General Secretary at Govt. Brennen College in Thalassery in 1995.
His influence grew, and in 1998, he became the inaugural chairman of the Kannur University Union. Thereafter, he took on leadership positions, serving as the S.F.I. Kannur District Committee’s president in 2003, among others.
His commitment earned him the position of state secretary of SFI in 2008, and he later rose to the position of joint secretary for all of India. In 2012, he switched to the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), rising to the position of Kannur District President.
In the political sphere, AN Shamseer ran for Loksabha in the Vatakara seat of Kerala as a candidate for the CPI (M); however, he almost lost by 3306 votes.
He has served as the Thalassery State Assembly Constituency’s elected representative since 2016. He is an active member of the CPI (M)’s Kerala State Committee. On September 12, 2022, Shamseer was elected as the 24th Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly.
