33-year-old Amanda Stamper contacted the police on June 11, 2023, to report domestic violence. She ran away from a Walgreens located near Valley View Boulevard and Flamingo Road, across from her apartment. She sheltered there, saying she was the target of her husband’s assassination attempt.
The police visited the couple’s home after further questioning yielded information about the welfare of the couple’s children.
Travis Doss emailed her a picture of his 11-year-old son and informed her that he thought he had battered him to death, according to the grand jury.
A police officer and her partner were visible in the bodycam video as they got outside their apartment, urging the children inside to unlock the door.
The officers informed the kids that they had previously spoken to their parents and that their only concern was keeping them safe. While refusing to unlock the door, a child inside the room informed the cops that they were not wounded and were OK.
The boy was eventually persuaded to let the police in by a maintenance worker.
They discovered six kids inside, all under the age of 11, crammed together in a one-bedroom flat. A small dog cage contained two of the kids—ages 9 and 11—who were padlocked inside.

Seven accusations of child abuse and neglect were also brought against Amanda Stamper, who is the stepmother to all of Doss’ children and the biological mother of just one of them. Both made a not-guilty plea.
