Erik ten Hag has trusted Mainoo in four of United’s five summertime friendly, making him one of the tour’s standout players. Many considered today’s game as an opportunity for the teenager to demonstrate his value against top-tier competition after being selected to play in central midfield alongside Casemiro.

But with only a few minutes in the clock, Mainoo’s evening came to an abrupt end. When Casemiro fouled Rodrygo, the Real player fell upon the 18-year-old midfielder, causing the injury.

Mainoo was evidently uncomfortable as he remained on the ground as the Real forward got to his feet. Two physiotherapists assisted United’s man in leaving the pitch, suggesting that the midfielder had an ankle injury.

As Ten Hag decided whether Mainoo could return to the game, Jude Bellingham gave his team the lead with a superb chip finish over Andre Onana. Before the game could continue, the Reds made the decision to replace the young Mainoo with Christian Eriksen.

Ten Hag is hopeful that the injury is not too severe, although he was unable to establish its full extent. Ten Hag told the reporters:

You can never tell straight after a game. We have to wait for what it is. So, hopefully, it’s not too bad and then chances will come. I wanted to see what levels he could play. Against Arsenal, we were pleased with his performance. I wanted to see if he could repeat that, some days after, from then, we would have conclusions. First, we have to wait for the diagnosis and, from there on, we will set conclusions.”

Danny Webber, a former United forward, thinks the collision was “unfortunate,” but depending on how much ligament damage was done, he may be out for one week to eight weeks. He stated on MUTV:

ย depends on the extent [of the damage], if it’s the inside or outside or the ligaments, we don’t know. The physio will have a look at it and it could range from one week to eight weeks. I’m enthused by the fact he walked off the pitch so I’d like to think it’s not as bad.”

It is to be seen when can the teenager return for the Red Devils as he left on crutches.
